Prof. Hespanha was elevated in rank to the rank of Fellow in the IFAC for his work titled "For contributions to the stability theory of switched and hybrid systems and its application to the analysis and design of networked control systems." The IFAC Fellow Award is given to persons who have made outstanding and extraordinary contributions in the field of interest of IFAC, in the role as an Engineer/Scientist, Technical Leader, or Educator.
